Silicone Material Selection Guide for OEM Products

How to turn application requirements into a useful silicone material brief for quotations, samples and production.

Start with performance, not a grade name

Tell the supplier what the product must withstand, contact and accomplish. The final material choice should be linked to the application, molding process and destination-market requirements.

1. Define the application environment

Material selection begins with use conditions. Explain whether the part seals, flexes, grips, cushions, touches food, contacts skin or operates outdoors. Include temperature exposure, cleaning method, expected service life and any chemicals or oils the part may encounter.

2. Match the material form to the product and process

Solid silicone rubber and liquid silicone rubber can support different production routes and product geometries. The right choice depends on part design, production volume, tolerances, automation needs and the supplier's validated process. Buyers should ask why a process is recommended instead of selecting one from price alone.

3. Specify hardness as a functional range

Hardness affects flexibility, compression, grip, sealing force and the way a product feels. Avoid choosing hardness only from a competitor sample without considering wall thickness and geometry. When possible, define an acceptable range and evaluate it on a molded sample.

  • Softer is not automatically better for sealing or durability
  • Geometry can make the same hardness feel very different
  • Color and additives should be evaluated with the selected material
  • Critical performance should be confirmed by an agreed test method

4. Identify destination-market requirements early

Food-contact, baby, healthcare and industrial products can have different documentation and testing expectations. Tell the supplier the destination countries and intended use before quotation. Ask which material documents are available and which finished-product tests remain the buyer's responsibility.

A raw-material statement does not automatically prove that every finished product meets every regulation. Pigments, printing, assembly, packaging and the final use condition may also need review.

5. Use a material brief that suppliers can quote
